, the largest network of private practice optometrists in North America, has named Michael Marcroft as its new vice president of marketing. He joins the network’s senior leadership team as of today (Monday, Dec.10) and will replace Randy Sones, who is currently vice president of marketing. Sones is retiring after a 27-year working history with Vision Source, according to an announcement. Marcroft will be responsible for the organization’s overall marketing strategies, initiatives and communications.

has appointed Andrea Bulgarelli as digital transformation director. In this role, Bulgarelli will lead Safilo’s e-commerce program as part of the company’s corporate direct-to-consumer strategy. He will report to Angelo Trocchia, Safilo’s CEO and will be based in Padua. In his career, Bulgarelli led the digital processes for the creation of the international e-commerce websites for Max Mara Group. More recently, at Benetton, he restructured the management of all consumer-facing touchpoints, developing this project into a digital hub, the company stated.

announced last week that it has received a $20 million pledge to support 10 new endowed faculty positions. The gift comes from the college's founding dean, professor emeritus James C. Wyant, and his family. It is the largest gift for endowed faculty chair positions in the university's history. "This is an incredible, enabling moment for the College of Optical Sciences, giving us an unprecedented opportunity to advance the rapidly expanding ways that optics and photonics can improve our lives," said Thomas L. Koch, dean of the College of Optical Sciences.

(CORE) has appointed William Ngo, PhD, OD, FAAO, as head of biosciences. Dr. Ngo is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry and will join CORE in early 2019. CORE, formerly known as the Centre for Contact Lens Research, was established in 1988 at the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry & Vision Science, and took on the new name a year ago. “I had the good fortune of directing Dr. Ngo as he undertook his PhD at the University of Waterloo, and witnessed firsthand his innate intelligence, natural curiosity and ability to build strong relationships with collaborators internally and externally,” CORE director Lyndon Jones, PhD, DSc, FCOptom, FAAO, FBCLA, said in the announcement late last week.
