NEW YORK—Backed by American Express,
Small Business Saturday celebrates its third year since launching two years ago as a way of encouraging shoppers to local stores and merchants across the U.S. Digital and social media will play an increasingly important role in raising awareness of the campaign.
For this year's Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24, the Saturday following Thanksgiving and the traditional "Black Friday" shopping day, some 200 organizations have joined
American Express OPEN in the "Shop Small movement." Over 100 million people shopped and supported the event in 2011.
Merchants and local businesses can show support for this year's event with a
Facebook 'like' and locate advocacy groups, public officials and corporate supports on
Amex's Shop Small page. Shop Small participants can receive downloadable tool kits and signage for the date while qualifying small businesses can also get
free online advertising targeted to certain geo-markets for the initiative.
In addition, American Express' Shop Small site offers prepared Facebook posts, Twitter tweets and other messages to let friends, colleagues and customers know about the day's happenings and your
participation.
The site also offers a host of ideas illustrating what other retailers did for Small Business Saturday
last year that worked best for their community and business.
