All Eyes on New Eyewear Technologies at International CES
Wearable devices—including the latest smartglasses—shared center stage with curved screen TVs and driverless cars at International CES, the annual mega-trade show for consumer electronics held earlier this month in Las Vegas. Attendees saw a wide assortment of high tech specs ranging from prototypes to finished products.
Google's highly publicized Glass was spotted on a number of "Explorers" attending or exhibiting at the show, although Google has yet to officially launch the proprietary smartglass. However, potential Glass competitors such as Vuzix (seen here), Optinvent, Glass Up, Lumus, Vergence Labs and XOEye showed off their own innovative augmented reality (AR) eyewear. Companies that offer sunwear or goggles with built-in video capabilities were also out in force, including Recon, Liquid Image and Pivothead.

Rochester Optical Is First to Offer Rx Lenses Optimized for Google Glass Wearers
Rochester Optical Manufacturing Co. is launching proprietary digital lens designs specifically optimized for Google Glass wearers who require prescription lenses, making it the first optical company to market an Rx lens for the highly publicized smart specs.
Rochester Optical said its scientists have created a new design called RO GOLD that eliminates unwanted aberrations perceived by the wearer in the directions of sight associated with Google Glass' Heads Up Display (HUD), giving the wearer a clear vision of the HUD, as well as the normal clear vision their lenses provide of the world around them.

Israeli Researchers Develop Bionic Contact Lens for the Congenitally Blind
Google made news last week with its announcement that it is developing a contact lens that can measure glucose levels in the tears of diabetics. But Google's scientists aren't the only ones who see contact lenses as a vehicle for new health care technology.
Researchers at Bar-Ilan University in Israel have devised a system that uses a tiny camera to capture visual information and transmit signals to a bionic contact lens.
