FDA Clears i-Optics EasyScan Smart Retinal Imaging

Product:
Easy Scan smart retinal imaging system from i-Optics
Top Line:
The EasyScan smart retinal imaging system from i-Optics has been 510(k) cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). “With aging populations and growing obesity, countries everywhere face a rapid increase in diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and other retinal diseases,” said Jeroen Cammeraat, CEO of i-Optics. “Unfortunately, the traditional fundus cameras used to diagnose these conditions are large, exclusive, and expensive, as well as being slow and difficult to use. EasyScan has been designed from the ground up to solve all these problems.”
Close Up: EasyScan is based on confocal Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope technology, which brings out clinical features in the retina in the earliest stages, provides better contrast than fundus cameras, and can better penetrate media opacities such as cataract and corneal opacities. It can image through pupils as small as 2mm, removing the need for pupil dilation and reducing the patient’s waiting time by at least 30 minutes. Patients can also drive home immediately after being examined, contrary to most fundus cameras where pupil dilation results in blurred vision for many hours after the exam.
Vital Stats: Timesaving benefits for the ECP include live image previewing, self-guiding software, automatic focusing and full digital workflow for storing, retrieving, archiving, and sharing images instantly. The portable EasyScan is 294mm wide by 423mm deep by 424mm high and weighs less than 7kg. It consumes little power by connecting to a PC or laptop via a standard USB connection, and no AC is required.

Topcon Introduces Synergy 2.0 for Eye Care Practices

More Images
Product:
Synergy 2.0 Software
Top Line: Topcon Medical Systems is introducing Synergy 2.0, software that increases efficiency and patient-throughput by integrating medical devices with patient records and EMR.
Close Up: Synergy 2.0 saves time and simplifies record-keeping by providing access to test results, reports and images from more than 125 ophthalmic devices through a single, extremely intuitive interface, according to Topcon. All of a patient’s medical information is stored in one place, making it easily available.
This next-generation software also reduces overhead. The secure platform is accessible from any exam room and remote locations. That helps cut the cost of purchasing multiple software licenses for every device in the office.
Patient data can be seen, annotated, compared and transmitted to and from any location, enabling practices to better manage patient care, as well as supporting telemedicine and remote diagnosis. Physicians can customize the way medical reports are viewed to work the most effectively for their practices.
The software includes a wide variety of reports for interpreting visual fields, optical coherence tomography (OCT) for retina, OCT for glaucoma, and fluorescein angiography, among others. Synergy 2.0 automatically aligns fundus images, regardless of the procedure or camera manufacturer. Synergy can also launch other manufacturer’s software to increase the functionality of the system or a particular medical device.
Among the new features offered by Synergy 2.0 are tighter integration with electronic medical and health record systems (EMR), as well as picture archiving and communication systems (PACS). This is done through leveraging standard communication technologies such as Health Level 7 (HL7) and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM).
Vital Stats: Topcon provides on-site training for new users, as well as offering online demonstrations and support.
