MEI Adds New Features to EZ Marker CO2 Laser
Product: EZ Marker
Top Line: The EZ Marker laser is designed for front side visible lens engravings, as well as backside semi-visible marks on any lens material. This engraver uses a CO2 laser source with a short focal distance scanning head. In order to cover the entire surface area of the lens, at the optimal inclination and focal distance, the lens is secured by the surfacing or edging block and positioned using four-axis CNC technology. The lens inclination and axes position are determined by the lens curvature and engraving location.
Close Up: Lenses are loaded and unloaded automatically from a standard job tray. Engraving is accomplished through a standard VCA/OMA connection to the operator’s server, combined with the engraving programs prepared in the EZ Marker’s Tecnocam software. These TRX engraving programs the operator creates in Tecnocam are loaded automatically using the standard VCA/OMA FRAM tag.
The EZ Marker uses a modified version of MEI’s typical Job Setup and Tecnocam interfaces that enable an operator to create, position, and customize engravings whether the design is created from scratch or imported as file types such as a BMP, JPG, DXF. The engraving can be positioned anywhere on the front and back lens surface, except for the area covered by the surfacing or edging block. For each engraving on every lens, the engraving location is accurately identified by a precise transducer that touches the lens surface.
The CO2 laser source controls the output power with a resolution of 0.001 W. This ensures high engraving stability in all conditions, on all material types. This machine is easily integrated into a free-form surfacing process because it uses a probe to accurately locate the lens surface at the point of each semi-visible engraving instead of using the lens surface map provided by the server. Each engraving is quickly and precisely located due to the four-axis lens positioning system. This system also guarantees all engravings are done with the laser perpendicular to each engraving entity, as well as at the correct focal length. In order to convert the EZ Marker from a semi-visible, backside lens engraver to a visible, frontside lens engraver, the operators only needs to change the lens-securing fixture and verify the correct focal distance. For frontside lens engravings, the machine uses a sensor and server data to determine the exact lens focal position of each engraving.
Vital Stats: The machine interface is VCA/OMA compatible. The software for creating and editing engraving designs is user-friendly, and you can import over 50 different picture and design file extensions. With a fully automatic loading and unloading system, the machine can be easily integrated into the manufacturing line or combined with MEI stacker/de-stacker systems.

Quantum Introduces UVA and HEV AR Coating
Product: Retinal Bliss
(RB) Tech
Top Line: As the ophthalmic industry continues to learn about the damage caused by UVA and HEV (High Energy Visible Light) spectrums, Quantum Innovations has developed an AR coating, RB Tech, to protect the eye from these types of radiation.
Close Up: Quantum created RB Tech because most lens treatments reflect UV and HEV rays from the backside of the eyeglass lens into the wearer’s eyes. The RB Tech coating reduces the amount of reflected UVA and HEV rays by up to 95 percent when compared to non-UV AR coatings. RB Tech can be installed in most coating equipment types.
Vital Stats: Concerns surrounding the damage caused by UVA are well documented. However, HEV—sometimes referred to as “blue light”—is less discussed. Although HEV rays have lower energy than UV rays, HEV radiation penetrates deeply into the eye and can cause damage to the retina.
