Optical Retail Veteran Designs All-in-one Lens Display and Mirror
Top Line: Papillon is an all-in-one lens options display and dispensing mirror.
Close Up: Neil Kabinoff, creator of Papillon, noticed the eyewear industry needed a single model to show customers the benefits of new lens technology. After 35 years of owning and operating eyeglass stores, he realized that the best way to build trust with customers is to educate them about their purchase. With Papillon, opticians can educate customers through an interactive experience by showing them the benefits and features of the three most lucrative lens options: anti-reflective, polarized, and photochromic. A rechargable power supply lets the optician place Papillon anywhere.
“Papillon increases the transparency of sales interactions by allowing opticians to plant the seed of purchasing lens options while customers choose frames,” said Kabinoff. “Papillon allows the customer to be aware of their total purchase throughout the sale. The customer is educated, empowered, and in control of their purchase.”
Vital Stats: Papillion is available through about 30 participating labs in the U.S. To order Papillon, visit

Vision Care Institute Debuts Clinical Grading Scales App
Product: Eyecare professionals in the U.S. now have easy access to one of the most comprehensive grading scales used in clinical practice, with the launch of The Vision Care Institute Clinical Grading Scales App, an educational tool designed to help practitioners assess the severity and evaluate the progression of complications associated with contact lens wear.
Top Line: Based on the clinical assessment guide derived from the grading scales developed by Prof. Nathan Efron, ECPs can use this innovative, easy-to-use resource during patient evaluations and follow-up. “Grading scales for contact lens complications are used extensively in optometric practice for a variety of purposes,” says Sheila Hickson-Curran, BSc(Hons), MCOptom, FAAO, DipCCLR, director, global strategic medical affairs, Vistakon Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. “This new app can assist practitioners in accurate and consistent clinical record keeping and help patients maintain healthy contact lens wear.”
Close Up: The new app allows users to evaluate nine common eye conditions (bulbar redness, corneal staining, lid redness, lid roughness, limbal redness, meibomian gland dysfunction, pterygium, pinguecula, cortical cataract) with severity levels that lessen and increase with real-time animation based on touch. It evaluates the progression of complications by comparing severity levels in 0.1 increments side-by-side. It will demonstrate clinical assessment to patients and export a report for office records without collecting personal data. It will also allow users to view a comprehensive assessment guide including slit lamp illumination techniques, corneal inflammation vs. infection, signs of oxygen deficiency, staining and lid assessments and more.
Vital Stats: The Vision Care Institute Clinical Grading Scales is a free app, compatible with the iPhone, and can be downloaded via the Apple App Store. It is not intended as, and does not constitute medical or optometric advice, the company noted. It is only available in the U.S. App Store at this time. TVCI is a division of
Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc.
