APD Tester: A Better Way to Test for APD

Product:
APD Tester
Top Line: The APD Tester offers a new way of testing for afferent pupillary defect. Babak Kamkar, OD, an optometrist in private practice in southern California, demonstrated a 3D printed prototype of the small, hand-held device to ophthalmologists attending the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s annual meeting last month in New Orleans.
Close Up: The device is unique in that it allows the examiner to see magnified view of both pupils in an overlapping field, simultaneously. By shining the light in the right eye the direct pupil reaction can be readily observed. Switching the light to the other eye allows immediate view of the other pupil within the same field of view. Detecting even a subtle relative afferent pupillary defect becomes much easier than the traditional swinging flashlight test. Dark irides, sluggish pupils, post-surgical or traumatic pupils are all relatively easy to examine.
APD Tester has a built-in Blue/UV light, which allows magnified examination of the conjunctiva or cornea. By instilling a drop of ophthalmic fluorescein dye in the eye, the blue/UV light can help diagnose a cornea foreign body, cornea abrasion, or even a cornea ulcer. This feature is especially helpful for primary care physicians or urgent care centers that usually do not have slit lamp biomicroscopes.
Vital Stats: The device has a patent pending and is being manufactured and distributed in limited supply by Richmond Products, which expects to release it in the first quarter of 2014.
