Sony Releases New Low-Cost, High Definition Camera
Product: Sony HD Camera MCC-500MD
Top Line: Sony Electronics’ Medical Systems Division is adding a flexible high-definition camera to its line of imaging technologies. The new model, MCC-500MD, made its debut at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) in New Orleans in November.
Close Up: The new camera is the successor to a widely used standard definition Sony model, and gives medical professionals a lower cost of entry into HD capture, priced at around $4,995.
“This new camera’s HD quality and image reproduction capabilities are perfect for capturing high resolution video and still images for ophthalmology procedures,” said Julie Holodak, senior marketing manager, Sony’s Medical Systems Division. “Its color performance rivals that of more expensive three-chip cameras and gives medical operations of any size a high-performance tool at a very affordable price.”
Vital Stats: The camera’s high-quality sensor lets physicians freeze an image at very high-quality and sharpness with no pixilation. The MCC-550MD camera has enough output flexibility to fit a range of medical environments, with HDMI, HD-SDI (1080P), S-video, composite connectivity. The camera can run on AC power, and its video sync capability allows easy use in 3D configurations.

New Device Allows Handheld Screening for Diabetic Retinopathy
Product: RETeval
Top Line: Access to diabetic retinopathy (DR) screenings by global populations is now much easier. LKC Technologies' RETeval, on display at the recent 2013 American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting, is a handheld DR screening device that enables virtually any health care provider to screen for and detect sight-threatening DR.
Close Up: Currently, DR screenings are done either by photographing the back of the eye and assessing the images or by an ophthalmologist/optometrist looking for visible signs of DR during a dilated eye examination. In contrast, RETeval is a functional test of the retina to assess the ischemic level of the retina which, based upon published literature, correlates well to DR and other ischemic diseases such as Central Retinal Vein Occlusion, Birdshot and others. RETeval is fast, easy to use and provides immediate results at a very low cost without dilation.
Vital Stats: RETeval is CE marked and already approved in Canada and Japan and is being used in a number of countries such as India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and the U.K. For the U.S., Datovech notes that it is not yet approved by the FDA for clinical use, "We are in the process of developing the clinical data necessary to submit for FDA approval."
LKC Technologies is pursuing creative means such as strategic distribution relationships and the potential of symbiotic relations with companies that have similar interests in ischemia and DR treatment.

Frames Data and My Vision Express Unveil New 'Immediate Data Access' Integration

Top Line: Frames Data’s state-of-the-art “Immediate Data Access” (IDA) integration with My Vision Express is currently available to My Vision Express 2014 users. The new integration allows eyecare professionals to access the most up-to-date frame information instantaneously via the internet.
Close Up: Frames Data updates its database daily with new frames, wholesale price changes and updates to existing frames. Frames Data IDA will allow My Vision Express users that have subscribed to the new service to easily access the updated data from any computer in their practice.
“That means no waiting, no disc in the mail, and immediate access to our database” said Tom Doyle, Frames Data’s director of key accounts. When the eyecare professional is ready to update their inventory, a simple process retrieves updated data and makes it available inside the software. Once inventory is updated, the ECP will be able to scan UPC barcodes, set retail pricing and submit managed care claims with minimal effort.
