Coburn Technologies Intros HPE-810 Patternless Edger
Product: HPE-810 Patternless Edger
Top Line: Coburn Technologies is introducing its latest finishing product for retail and wholesale lens labs, the HPE-810 Patternless Edger.
Close Up: The HPE-810 Edger is designed to create a more efficient practice for utilizing better graphics and processing times. Detailed images of bevel/groove positions provide the user with a more accurate look while faster processing signifies the ability to modify the next job while a current job is under way.
Vital Stats:
- Highly efficient CPU: 1GHz CPU supports next job editing during current job processing.
- Faster processing: Supports faster edging by 30 percent and drilling by 40 percent from the previous model.
- Customized mini bevel: Bevel height is customizable for frames with short groove depth and produces lens which fits perfectly in its frame. (Min 0.1-Max 0.8mm)
- Concave shape processing: Processes even concave shapes on lenses within a range of wheel curvature.
- Easy click editing (for Chemistrie clip features): Chemistrie clip editing function allows far- and near-sight glasses, and even sunglasses, to be used on a single frame. The entire process can easily be done with a single click on a user-friendly UI.
- Auto/manual 3D simulation: 3D simulation supports easier bevel/groove positioning. Auto positioning function reads frame & lens curve automatically & determines the best position of the bevel/groove. Manual positioning allows opticians to manually position bevel/groove for the best result.
- Powerful drill: High power motor makes HPE-810 more powerful and leads to 40 percent reduction in processing time from the previous model (HPE-7000). Easy hole editing management and high power motor creates a great combined effect for rimless glasses.
- Design Your Imagination (optional) with Scan & Cut: As eyeglass designs continue to diversify, the demand for edgers capable of processing these designs are increasing. This function supports these demands without restrictions.
- Tiltable drill for high curve lenses: Range of 0°-30° supports excellent hole processing for all kinds of high curve lenses.
- Bidirectional feeling-processing time reduction: Bidirectional feelers of the edger’s improved configuration are more durable and simultaneous feeling of front and back sides reduces lens thickness recognition time by a maximum of 50 percent.
“The market will be impressed with HPE-810’s speed as a result of its enhanced horsepower motor and larger wheel. The Chemistries Clip software and integrated drill is ideal for ECPs trying to expand their business yet concerned with space constraints,” said Wayne Labrecque, vice president of sales.
HPE-810 Edger will be showcased at this year’s Vision Expo West in Las Vegas, Nev., and American Academy of Optometry in New Orleans, La.

SOFTWARE
MacPractice Releases MacPractice 20/20 5.1
Product: MacPractice 20/20 5.1
Top Line: MacPractice, an Apple developer of practice management and clinical software for eyecare offices that prefer Macs, iPhones and iPads, is releasing MacPractice 20/20 5.1. The new version features integrated HIPAA-compliant communication, faxing and reputation marketing, powered by BirdEye.
Close Up: A leading OS X native medical software, ICD-10 capable MacPractice 5.1 is compatible with Yosemite and Mavericks and interoperates with MacPractice’s iOS native Patient Check In, Clipboard and iEHR Apps for iPad, as well MacPractice Interface for iPad and MacPractice Interface for iPhone.
“We’ve studied the market and collaborated with our clients. MacPractice 20/20 5.1 has the best integrated online patient portal services, including online Registration and EHR Forms and HIPAA-compliant, secure messaging,” said Mark Hollis, MacPractice co-founder and CEO.
“With MacPractice 20/20, patients can use iPads as well as our integrated online patient services to enter demographics and clinical information,” Hollis continued. “Also, doctors and assistants can review patient-entered structured data, visit notes and images on an iPad with their patient. With MacPractice 5.1, doctors avoid expensive web service contracts by using superior online solutions available at a lower cost, with better software integration, support and functionality that can only be provided by their practice management software developer.”
MacPractice’s Scheduling Ability has been rewritten to boost speed and performance in the office, especially for remote offices. Besides integrated faxing and HIPAA-secure messaging powered by Updox and MacPractice, MacPractice plans to provide to its users every third-party, online service available at a lower cost and with tighter integration and greater security, along with web services not available from other vendors:
Offices can avoid HIPAA penalties of up to $50,000 per incident (e.g., per single noncompliant email or text) in 2015, which is being called The Year of Audits, by secure communication services.
For practices without a website, MacPractice plans to create and host a one-page site for $10 monthly. MacPractice 5.1 has new user-requested practice management reports. MacPractice’s preferred vendor for phone, text, and/or email patient reminders is AutoRemind, which is tightly integrated with MacPractice Schedule and includes automatic appointment status updates. MacPractice partners with Transworld to provide in-application collection services superior to those offered by web services that cannot write back to practice management software.
Vital Stats: Purchasers of MacPractice receive $500 off or $1,000 off for an EHR “trade-up” from now until December 31, 2015. MacPractice 20/20 MU 5.0 is ONC-ACB 2014 Edition Certified, and MacPractice will maintain certification for MacPractice 20/20 MU 5.1.

WEB TECH
Transitions Optical Launches Social Media Content Aggregator on TransitionsPRO.com
Product: TransitionsPRO.com/NewLens
Top Line: Transitions Optical has developed a web page that makes it easier for eyecare professionals to join the #ThroughANewLens discussion and engage more fashion-forward and tech-savvy patients with fresh social media content. The web page, found at TransitionsPRO.com/NewLens, gives eyecare professionals the ability to easily view—and most importantly, share—a series of consumer videos that are available as part of Transitions Optical’s “See Life Through a New Lens” consumer campaign.
Close Up: The socially-shareable videos feature fashion tips and trends from style maven and eyeglass guru Sarah Evans at South by Southwest (SXSW); content from Rolling Stone’s “Dawn to Dusk” editorial series sponsored by Transitions adaptive lenses; and a way to showcase Transitions Trial Decals. Simple share buttons make it possible for an eyecare professional to share an item directly with their patients on their Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+ accounts. This is a great resource for connecting with patients on social media. As activities surrounding Transitions Optical’s consumer campaign and high-profile media partnerships continue to unfold, new content will be uploaded.
“We know how busy our industry partners are, and understand that it can be tough to allocate time and resources toward making sure their social media pipelines are full,” said Patience Cook, director, North America marketing, Transitions Optical. “Even though we are already sharing these digital assets on our brand’s social pages, we are also housing them on our professional website so that our partners can visit one place and easily pick and choose from the most up-to-date activities related to our consumer campaign. Our goal with the page is to provide our partners with unique messages that will encourage more consumers to reconsider how a ‘New Lens’—like Transitions adaptive lenses—can fit into their personal style and offer rich visual experiences.”
