Optical Dispensing Assistant
Top Line: Optical Directions Consulting has released a new iPad application, Optical Dispensing Assistant, on the Apple App Store. Developed by Rob McQualter, an independent optometrist in Melbourne, Australia, the app aids in multifocal measurement and frame selection.
Close Up: Using the camera and gyroscope in the iPad 2, Optical Dispensing Assistant allows you to accurately measure progressive lens heights and monocular PDs by directing accurate photography of the patient while wearing their spectacles.
Being a hand-held device, the iPad removes the necessity of having an area of the store dedicated to lens measurement, as other larger systems require.
Optical Dispensing Assistant also includes a four-images-at-once frame selection digital mirror, with the ability to print, email or save the pictures. The app requires a camera, so is only compatible with the iPad 2.
Vital Stats: Optical Dispensing Assistant is available worldwide on the Apple App Store for $64.99.

AOA Launches Contact Lens Safety Web Site

Top Line:
The American Optometric Association (AOA) launched www.ContactLensSafety.org, a new, easy-to-use Web site to help answer consumer questions about contact lens safety. The AOA Contact Lens and Cornea Section (CLCS) created the site with the assistance of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO).
Close Up: A wide range of information can be found on the site. Topics covered include lens replacement schedules, purchasing contact lenses and contact lens wear in various environments. Also included is the “Ask the Expert” section where consumers can submit their contact lens question to a panel of experts.
“With more than 30 million Americans wearing contact lenses for vision correction, we saw a need to be able to answer questions that may come up outside of normal business hours,” said Thomas Quinn, Jr., OD, AOA CLCS Council Member. “This site has been created to become a one-stop resource for questions regarding contact lens safety.”
Vital Stats: Dr. Quinn cautions that the site offers only information on contact lens safety and is not a substitute for an annual comprehensive eye examination.
