Santinelli to Debut Dry-Cut, Five-Axis Milling Edger at VEW

Top Line: Santinelli International will debut its dry-cut lens edging technology with the all-new Xtrimer SE-1 Industrial Edger at Vision Expo West. The debut will provide show attendees with a preview of the unit’s proprietary five-axis milling technology.
Close Up: The Xtrimer SE-1 was designed in Japan by Nidek lens edger engineers with the goal of providing the latest and most advanced dry edging technology and cutting edge software in a user-friendly, reliable, and space-saving design. The edger’s robust construction and compact size are well suited to both high volume retail labs and industrial wholesale labs, Santinelli said. The unit is also optimized for processing durable lens materials such as polycarbonate and Trivex. Its new platform will feature the company’s signature quality high curve beveling, grooving, drilling, polishing, safety beveling, customized shelf beveling, inclined beveling and partial step beveling.
Vital Stats: The Xtrimer SE-1 will be available as a stand-alone edger and is also designed to operate in a large volume capacity in conjunction with the RHU-2200 Robotic Handing System. It will be in final production design in early 2013, according to Santinelli.

M&S Technologies Intros Software for Easy, Quick and Reliable Vision Screenings

Top Line: M&S Technologies, a supplier of computerized vision testing systems, developed FirstTest to ensure that pediatricians, eyecare professionals, school nurses and other health agencies have the most advanced tools to accurately and efficiently screen children and adults in order to identify potential eye disorders. It is the first computerized vision screening system that follows AAP, AAPOS and AOA guidelines, according to M&S Technologies.
Close Up: Fast, easy-to-use and reliable, FirstTest conforms to Pediatric and Ophthalmic Professional Association vision screening guidelines. An advantage of this system is that it can be conducted by anyone in the practice. In a high volume pediatric practice or health screening environment such as schools, city or county vision programs, the screening can be conducted with minimal training. The user simply selects letters or symbols, type of test, age of the child and the screening begins. The average screening time is two minutes.
Vital Stats: FirstTest can operate on any PC running Windows XP or Windows 7, whether it be a laptop or one of the M&S Smart System All-in-One units. And the software can be easily calibrated by each administrator with the testing distance, letter/symbol set and test type (Critical Line, Single Letter with Crowding Bars, Massachusetts Test and Threshold Test). M&S is the exclusive provider of LEA symbols and numbers in a digital format.

VisionWeb Offers Ophthalmic Product Ordering Service Compatibility With Apple Computer’s Safari Browser

Top Line: VisionWeb recently announced that its online ophthalmic product ordering service is now compatible with Apple Computer’s default web browser, Safari.
Close Up: In the last five years, Apple Computers have quickly become common place in many practices, but the default web browser, Safari, has limited eye care provider’s ability to fully reap the benefits of online ophthalmic ordering through VisionWeb. With this new compatibility, VisionWeb hopes to make convenient online spectacle lens, contact lens, and frame ordering a reality for as many practices as possible – regardless of their technology preferences.
“VisionWeb’s ophthalmic product ordering service being compatible with Safari is very exciting news for eye care providers,” said Julia Crawford, director of product strategy at VisionWeb. “This new compatibility not only means that Mac users will no longer have to download additional software to order products on VisionWeb, but that eye care providers will also have more technology options to choose from when implementing new hardware.”
Vital Stats: VisionWeb’s Safari browser compatibility works for Apple desktops and laptops wanting to use VisionWeb’s spectacle lens, contact lens, and frame ordering services, but is not currently available for VisionWeb’s electronic claim filing service or Apple iPad and iPhone devices. VisionWeb’s new Safari compatibility also allows Apple computer using eye care providers to take advantage of their product ordering services full gambit of features including: 24/7 access to all order and archives, online order tracking, and trace file uploading.

BPI Intros New Lens Marker

Top Line: BPI is introducing a new lens marker, BPI Mark It! in its own dispenser pen.
Close Up: The handy 15 ml pen allows the marker to be used in confined spaces. For example, it may be used to mark lenses while their marks are being read in a BPI ID Tech. The solution is not water based, so it will mark regular plastic lenses as well as A/R or hydrophobic lenses. The highly visible orange mark dries in minutes and may be removed using BPI Mark Off Plus.
