Topcon Launches KR-800S Auto Refractor With Subjective Testing
|
Top Line: Topcon Medical Systems (TMS) is releasing the KR-800S Auto Kerato-Refractometer with Subjective and Glare Testing.
Close Up: The new 5-in-1 KR-800S features the very latest in autorefraction technology, incorporating Topcon’s proven Rotary Prism technology for unparalleled accuracy and consistent measurements. It adds on Subjective Visual Acuity testing, allowing you to refine a patient’s measurements. The KR-800S features several new tests, including a visual acuity (VA) check for near and far distance, a contrast sensitivity test, a grid test, and glare testing, that can be utilized to assess a patient’s visual acuity under glare conditions. This is especially important for a patient who may be a candidate for cataract surgery or who complains of poor nighttime vision.
“The new KR-800S combines the very latest in auto-refraction technology with the added benefit of subjective visual acuity testing, making it the ideal instrument for any practice,” summarized Robert Gibson, vice president of marketing for TMS.
Vital Stats: The KR-800S also features a compact and user-friendly design with a 8.5” color touchscreen display that provides quick and accurate readings with minimal training required.

Eschenbach Releases iZoom Screen Magnifier
|
Top Line: With iZoom, low vision patients can quickly magnify the images and text on their computer without having to go through a complicated installation process. iZoom lets users not only choose the level of magnification they prefer, but it also allows them the ability to change text/background colors (to reduce glare and improve contrast), increase mouse pointer size, realign web pages, and even have their documents, emails and web pages spoken out loud to them.
The software is run directly from a flash drive; there is no need to have Administrator Rights to permit downloading the software onto a computer. This means users can access iZoom on a personal or a shared computer (at a library, senior center, or computer lab).
Close Up: iZoom works on any laptop or PC that has a Microsoft Windows operating system and starts up immediately after inserting the flash drive into the USB port of the computer. [Minimum requirements: OS: Windows XP/Vista (32/34 bit); Free disk space: 500MB; Memory: 1GB RAM.] iZoom is compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8.
To make the user experience even easier, the iZoom USB Eye Care Edition features a short wizard that quickly and easily lets users select their magnification and viewing preferences from among the most common options. Once selected, iZoom then opens and magnifies whatever is on the user's screen (using the options selected). When done, users simply remove the flash drive from their computer.
Vital Stats: Magnification is 1.5x - 50x. Preference Wizard enables user to set background and text colors; mouse pointer color; locators. Narration function included. Software does not need Administrator Rights to function. Users can get free, one-hour training session by calling (201) 984-5687.

SpecialEyes Website Upgrade Adds Calculators and Tools for Custom Soft Contact Lenses
More Images |
Top Line: Practitioners can navigate to the SpecialEyes Learning Center to access a prescribing nomogram, custom contact lens fitting guides, horizontal visible iris diameter (HVID) measuring tips, optical zone assessment tips, and other useful tools and information.
Close Up: To ensure accurate fitting of custom contact lens prescriptions, SpecialEyes also offers two easy-to-use online calculators. The SpecialEyes Arc Length Calculator was developed by P. Douglas Becherer, OD, FAAO. “The software yields a similar contact lens design as some sagittal-depth fitting techniques. The site also hosts an Over-Refraction Calculator, which determines the resultant prescription after a successful in-office over-refraction is performed.
Vital Stats: On the Arc Length Calculator, said Dr. Becherer, “The software yields a similar contact lens design as some sagittal-depth fitting techniques and requires just a few simple measurements – HVID, central K values, and spectacle prescription – to accurately calculate arc length of the cornea. This enables SpecialEyes to successfully produce a custom sphere, toric, or multifocal contact lens design for even the most difficult-to-fit patients.”
