Ultra Optics to Showcase New Backside Coater at Vision Expo
|
Top Line: Next week, at International Vision Expo, Ultra Optics is releasing the 44R, a fully automated backside coater that is the first of its kind.
Close Up: The 44R utilizes a robotic arm to pick and place lenses from the work trays into the processing modules of the machine. As the work trays roll in from the conveyor system, the 44R’s bar code scanner reads the work ticket and communicates with the lab’s LMS system to determine how the lenses are to be processed for each individual job. While the system builds on the robust coating processes of prior Ultra Optics machines, such as the MR III, the Ultra Rx, and others, it incorporates several process improvements to further improve efficiency and reduce breakage. Breakage rates are reduced by a more complete lens wash process, as well as processing the lenses on the block. Keeping the lenses on the block also provides tremendous support for the lens, effectively eliminating the warping of high index lenses.
Vital Stats: The 44R includes a feature that allows the lens to be washed only, without coating the lens, thus allowing minimal disruption to workflow and eliminates the need for an operator to wash the lens after polishing. The 44R will enable labs to increase their profits by reducing breakage and labor costs.

EXAMS / DISPENSING
Topcon Releases Easy-to-Use Retinal Camera
Top Line: Topcon is introducing the TRC-NW400, a fully automated, easy-to-use, auto-focus, auto-capture non-mydriatic retinal camera that is designed to obtain high resolution color images of the retina and the anterior segment of the human eye. The TRC-NW400 incorporates a rotating touch panel monitor that allows the operation of the instrument from virtually any angle. This feature lets the photographer be in front, behind or at either side of the patient, optimizing space savings. The TRC-NW400 can comfortably be operated when located against a wall or in a corner.
Close Up: Operators no longer have to take time to align, center, focus and capture color retinal images. The TRC-NW400 does it all by itself quickly and accurately. The TRCNW400 automatically travels from one eye to the other when both eyes are being photographed. Just positioning the camera in front of the patient's eye is all that's necessary to obtain sharp and clear color images of the retina. All functions pertaining to the capture are performed automatically by the internal firmware of the camera.
The TRC-NW400 can be connected to a digital capture system or used as a stand-alone instrument. Being fully DICOM compliant, the TRC-NW400 can save images to a remote server or EMR system without the need for a computer. Additionally, the TRC-NW400 can retrieve the modality work list from the EMR server and save the images captured after the session is completed.
As an independent device, the TRC-NW400 can save images and patient data to a conventional USB drive and print images via a USB port.
The fully automatic features of the TRC-NW400 make it the ideal capture device for active eyecare facilities as well as for screening clinics documenting systemic diseases that can affect the retinal vessels. No previous training for ophthalmic photography is needed to operate the instrument and with a brief explanation of the functions virtually anyone can obtain sharp and clear images of the eye fundus. Images of the anterior segment of the eye can also be obtained with the use of the anterior segment feature in the easy-to-follow menu.
Vital Stats:
- Fully automatic acquisition
- Manual mode available
- High-quality sensor
- On-board diagnostics for remote servicing
- Space saving design
- DICOM compliant
- Modality work list retrieval
- Remote storage capability
- Anterior segment photography
- Nine internal fixation targets
- Automatic small pupil detection
- Automatic blink detection
- Automatic stereo capture
