More Images |
Top Line: Optometry practices looking for a way to empirically measure the success of their website and online marketing efforts can now sign up for EyeCarePro’s free PowerData service. PowerData is a robust benchmarking service that reports a practice’s website analytics and compares the results against industry results based on a dataset of over 1,400 optometric practices in North America. PowerData compares a practice’s website performance data to other practices based on size, state, number of ODs, location, time in practice, annual revenue and EHR used.
Close Up: “Your website is the salesperson for your practice online,” said Michael Porat, COO of EyeCarePro. “Like any salesperson, you want to see how he is performing his job and PowerData can provide this insight about your website.”
EyeCarePro CEO, Daniel Rostenne, added, “We are in the unique position to offer this valuable service because of the vast number of practices we serve. This type of data can have a positive influence on the industry as a whole, helping optometrists to improve the way patients find their services online. There is no other company out there that can provide this type of data and we are thrilled to be able to offer it to any practice, client or not, for free.”
Vital Stats: The monthly report includes an easy-to-read and understand version of the practice website Google analytics, along with the PowerData score which measures how your website results compare against similar practices. Additionally, it provides the number of new and existing patient appointments made through your practice website, which is a clear indicator of the effectiveness of the website at bringing in new business.

Vision Industry Veterans Launch Quuxx to Encrypt Prescriptions to Help ECPs Adhere to Regulations
Top Line: To help eyecare professionals share patient information while adhering to new health care regulations, Quuxx launched earlier this year with plans to introduce a full suite of cloud-based integrated solutions known as the vRxID Solution Suite. The new company launched its Vision Provider Network ECP locator at Vision Expo West in September.
Close Up: The new company’s goal is to enable ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians to remove information that identifies patients from their prescriptions so that they can then be shared with others while still adhering to HIPAA and other health care regulations. The identifying information becomes encrypted and converted into a unique tracking number known as a vRxID that can then be shared anonymously between the ECP and the lab, manufacturer or other partners without violating HIPAA and other laws. “As the vision industry continues to adapt to HIPAA, HITECH, and Omnibus regulations, migration to vRxID will be critical to encourage an open, industry-wide competitive marketplace,” according to a statement from Quuxx, explaining the need for the vRxID Solution Suite. “As the regulatory pressure continues to mount on the vision industry, the vRxID is a strategic mechanism to provide a ‘plug-and-play,’ competitive industry.”
The Vision Provider Network will be followed shortly after but in concert with the introduction of Quuxx’s Vision Prescription (vRx) Consumer Mobile App, an application that enables individuals to store their vision prescription for future purchases, allows patients to access their managed care benefits and provides a conduit through which ECPs can offer users special offers tailored to their specific needs.
The mobile application seamlessly links ECPs who are registered on the Vision Provider Network with consumers who have downloaded the Vision Prescription (vRx) mobile application. The linkage creates a unique tracking number, the vRxID, which enables the ECP to directly communicate and disseminate information to their patients. The app will also automatically notify prescribing doctors when patients fill their eyeglasses prescriptions even when they are not filled by the prescribing doctors themselves. This will enable ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians to have access to information that was previously unavailable to them, according to Quuxx.
Vital Stats: Opticians, optometrists and ophthalmologists can register for a free listing on the Vision Provider Network, a database of eyecare providers where they can identify their specialties, the types of insurances they accept and other details specific to their practice.

BPI Intros Blue Light Filter Vision Tester
Top Line: Blue/Violet light is a problem for the eye, since it scatters more than other wavelengths, causing unwanted light “noise” within the eye. Reducing the spectral range of light entering the eye lens also cuts down on lens chromatic aberration. Age-related macular degeneration problems, which may be exacerbated by blue/violet light, have been cited in medical journals.
Close Up: BPI has recognized the need to protect the eye from short wavelength light for many years; its Blue Barrier/Filter-Vision/Designed Spectrum 450, 500 and 540 absorptive tints have long been available. These tints absorb all (not just reflecting back 20 percent) of the harmful light of wavelengths shorter than 450nm, 500nm and 540nm, respectively, including UV light.
BPI’s new Blue Light Filter Vision Tester (BPI Product # 109519) is a blue/violet light source that demonstrates the effectiveness of a blue/violet light blocking lens. The intense blue light beams produced by the source are greatly attenuated by some lenses and the effect is readily observed when the lenses are placed between the source and the eye.
