Top Line: OrCam is a wearable smart camera designed to assist those who are blind and visually impaired by accessing information such as reading and identifying objects.
Close Up: The OrCam company is launching the camera with several features including OCR, product learning, facial recognition and touch reading. OCR is a feature that allows the OrCam to read most printed text out loud in real time. The product learning feature allows users to teach the OrCam an object or product (like a can or boxed item in a supermarket) and facial recognition, which the wearer can use later to identify people. The same feature also allows money identification; U.S. currency comes pre-programmed in the device.
The company is developing additional features, such as place and bus identification.
Vital Stats: The post-launch program also includes free software upgrades from the date of purchase until the two year warranty expires. This means that as new features become available they will be provided to users free of charge. The price of the post-launch is $3,500; this includes two to three hours of training in the user's home from a certified OrCam trainer and a 30-day refund return period minus $250 training fee.
