EyeDNA Releases EyeBeam, a Laser Engraver for Private Branding
Top Line: EyeDNA is releasing EyeBeam, a laser engraver for optical materials compatible with Eyedentify eyewear and accessories. Created by inventor Dennis G. Zelazowski, EyeBeam enables the operator to quickly and easily create their own branded private label product via engraving names and logos on plastic and metal eyewear. EyeBeam features a laser for high speed marking and engraving with a highly accurate resolution of .01mm, and a 3-axis adjustment table. Compatible with a wide variety of ophthalmic materials, EyeBeam allows companies to have the flexibility to adapt to changing eyewear styles without risking a large investment in inventory.
Eyedentify Ophthalmic is a collection of optical frames and materials that work in conjunction with the EyeBeam laser engraver. Distinct dispensary form factors such as frames, mirrors, dispensing mats, and other commonly used tools are material-matched based on their interaction with the laser beam wavelength to provide a clear and precise marking result.
Close Up: EyeBeam is designed to work with acetate, nylon, metal, injected plastics, and other materials used to manufacture spectacle frames. Branding or personalization such as logos, text, and images are rapidly etched or marked by laser beam. Easy to use computer software configures graphics and controls operation of the laser.
Although intended for optical laboratories and retailers interested in private label production, Eyebeam is also suited for ECPs who want to gain better creative control over their product mix and increase their brand equity and connection with clients.
Vital Stats: The laser is rated for 100,000 hours of marking before service recommendation. EyeDNA offers a one-year warranty for any manufacturer defects.

Hoya Intros Yuniku, a 3D Scanning System for Creating Personalized Eyewear
Top Line: Hoya Vision Care, in collaboration with Materialise NV and Hoet Design Studio, is launching Yuniku, a 3D scanning system designed to be installed in opticians' shops. The system, debuted last week at SILMO, takes high-resolution scans of a customer's facial anatomy for fully 3D-tailored eyewear.
Close Up: Yuniku enables individualized lens and frame design, with a sophisticated end-to-end digital supply chain. Both lenses and frames can be designed and positioned to fit an individual’s unique facial features, functional needs, and vision requirements, resulting in an enhanced vision experience, increased comfort, and new possibilities for personalization.
For opticians, Yuniku is an opportunity to deliver more effective interaction and service to their clients, enhancing their buying experience, while the use of 3D printing also opens new distribution possibilities and eliminates the stock risks common to the eyewear industry, Hoya said. For the end-consumer, Yuniku means eyewear tailored to their unique visual, comfort and aesthetic needs.
“Yuniku is an exciting step forward in custom eyewear. By capitalizing on advances in 3D printing technology, we have removed the limitations posed by traditional spectacles,” said Jon Warrick, vice president global marketing, Hoya Vision Care. “For the first time, wearers can enjoy the ultimate in optical performance, without compromising on style or fit.”
Vital Stats: Conventional eyewear design does not allow for optimal lens performance because opticians face restrictions in lens placement resulting from the frame chosen by the customer. To turn this around, Materialise and Hoya co-created a custom 3D scanner and software platform, directly linked to Materialise’s Certified Additive Manufacturing factory. Using 3D scanning, parametric design automation, and 3D Printing, the Yuniku platform designs the frame around the ideal position of the optical lenses.
The Yuniku experience starts with a scan to capture facial features, and a short questionnaire to determine the wearer’s visual needs. Advanced software designed by Hoya uses facial and visual data to determine the ideal position of the lenses in relation to the eyes and communicates this with Materialise’s software, which in turn tailors the frame around the lenses according to the wearer’s unique facial characteristics. Frame design, color and finish can all be adjusted to match the customer’s individual style, with the integrated software solutions working to ensure that both ideal lens positioning and fit are preserved. Additionally, a screen will display a virtual image of the customer in the selected eyewear, ensuring complete satisfaction with the end result, according to Hoya.
The base frame collection for Yuniku comes from Hoet Design Studio. As Yuniku is an open platform, further branded frames, from both Hoet and other designers, will be added to the collection. The range features an exclusive selection of frame designs, colors and finishes. These are complemented by a choice of a premium progressive, single vision or indoor lens.

Frames Data Integrates Software with iMedicWare
More Images |
Top Line: iMedicWare, a leading provider of certified EMR/PM, optical, and ASC software specifically designed for ophthalmologists, has completed an integration with Frames Data. This integration gives iMedicWare users the ability to subscribe to a service called Frames Data IDA (Immediate Data Access), which enables iMedicWare’s subscribers to access frame information instantaneously without loading a disc or downloading a separate file.
Close Up: "It’s great to have iMedicWare launch this all-new integration,” said Tom Doyle, director of marketing and key accounts at Frames Data. “We’re always happy to work with a software partner that’s automating inventory processes. Automation makes it much easier for eyecare professionals to realize the full benefit of using Frames Data.”
Anish Kapur MD, vice president of sales and marketing at iMedicWare, commented, “We are extremely excited to have partnered with Frames Data on this new venture. We strive to provide our valued subscribers with the best solution possible, and Frames Data helps us do that. Frames Data’s integration gives us not only increased functionality, but it allows our system to become a completely comprehensive inventory management solution. When paired with our award winning EMR and practice management solution, an ophthalmic practice can run their entire office easily and efficiently. Frames Data’s integration allows any practice to seamlessly manage their inventory, track price changes, and keep up with the latest trends."
Vital Stats: The Frames Data integration brings all of the data into iMedicWare’s system via the web, which alleviates users from having to enter any information manually, further improving the productivity of the practice. “Once the data is in the software’s inventory database,” Doyle explained, “it’s used to get new frames into the inventory with a quick barcode scan, setting retail rates and submitting managed care claims automatically. It also adds frames to a re-order list when inventory reaches a set level.”
