Brien Holden Vision Institute Develops Myopia ‘Calculator’
Top Line: The Brien Holden Vision Institute has developed a new evidence-based myopia "calculator" that will help support clinicians in communicating and educating patients in managing myopia appropriately. The calculator has been developed as part of the myopia management program being implemented by Brien Holden Vision Institute.
The free, simple to use web-based tool runs on a range of electronic devices and merges individual patient information with different optical and pharmacological treatment options to illustrate the impact on their future level of myopia.
Close Up: The tool allows practitioners to input patient age and level of refractive error when beginning therapy and select a treatment option. It then demonstrates the effect of the treatment on myopia progression, and how it is likely to progress without treatment.
“We have a series of myopia projects to address a major public health problem of our times,” said Prof. Padmaja Sankaridurg, head of the myopia program at Brien Holden Vision Institute. “We’re not only developing novel optical treatments for myopia management and conducting epidemiological research, but, through professional development courses and aids like the calculator, providing practitioners with the knowledge and tools to offer their patients the best evidence-based treatment options,” she added.
The Brien Holden Vision Institute’s online ‘Managing Myopia’ course, which was recently held for Australian practitioners, is now being conducted in the U.S. and India and will soon be translated for China.

Frames Data Launches Virtual Try-On (VTO) for My Frame Gallery
Top Line: Frames Data has announced that My Frame Gallery, its new product launching at Vision Expo West 2017, will include a built-in Virtual Try-On (VTO) module provided by FittingBox.
Close Up: My Frame Gallery will allow independent retailers to subscribe to a service which automatically generates a virtual frame board using the extensive Frames Data database of eyewear, which includes data and full-color imagery. This online frame board can be customized by the practice in a number of ways, including with the retailer’s logo, hours, and location address, as well as frame selection by supplier, brand, collection and style. The result is a highly customized website that reflects the branding and selection of the retailer, which can be added to an existing website as a link, or can even function as a default site in the case where one does not already exist. This new VTO feature will allow a patient to upload a photo in order to preview how frames will look on their face, before they try-on the physical frames at the provider’s office.
According to Jane George, product manager for Frames Data, the VTO module will add another reason for consumers to be drawn to the online galleries created by eyecare professionals via the My Frame Gallery product. She said, "Virtual Try-On is not only fun to use, but it’s also a great tool to help patients choose frames. This partnership has the potential to help put VTO in reach for thousands of retailers."
Vital Stats: The new product, which can be previewed at www.framesdata.com/gallery, will be officially available at Vision Expo West 2017, as well as online on September 14, 2017.
