Artificial Intelligence (AI) of tomorrow is still being built today. But what’s already at work today with shoppers in the e-commerce space are “bots” or, to be more clear, “chatbots” that engage and learn more about users’ preferences and interests.
Already underway at eBay is a very human-like agent sending shoppers suggestions, based on what they linger on, search for and purchase. And experts believe that this new AI interface will change the idea of “shopping” even further in the next few years.
At Venture Beat’s MB 2017 conference last month, the notion of personalization was explored in one of the sessions.
“The new norm for e-commerce will be situational,” explains Japjit Tulsi, the VP of Engineering at eBay. “Some shopping occasions will take place via voice interfaces, without the need for a screen. Some will be a hybrid experience, which could include chatbots. Some will be in virtual and augmented reality. And some will happen through traditional self-serve online experiences without the need for assistance or conversation.”
He added, “Our goal is to build an AI platform that enables truly personalized shopping and provides a service that is better than what the best human sales assistants can offer customers today.”
