NEW YORK—As parts of the Carolinas braced for more flooding this weekend following the heavy rains dumped on the states by Hurricane Florence, residents and businesses across the two states, as well as other areas of the Southeast, began returning to their homes and businesses Wednesday as they began to assess the damage and work on recovery.

The Ohio State University College of Optometry (OSU) announced Marielle Blumenthaler, a fourth-year OD student, as the first-ever recipient of the OSU Student Innovator Award. The award recognizes innovative, creative, and feasible ideas of a current student at different optometry schools. This is the first year OSU has offered the award. Blumenthaler’s winning idea proposes the integration of vision therapy services into elementary schools serving low-income students. The idea is to bring in sensory motor evaluations, vision therapy sessions, and progress checks to the school to neutralize barriers to care and to optimize children’s academic success.

The Texas Higher Education Foundation has announced the appointment of Fred Farias III, OD, to the Board of Trustees. The Foundation, official nonprofit partner of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, has raised more than $22 million in support of the state’s higher education strategic goals since being founded in 2001, according to an announcement this week. Brien Holden Humanitarian Award winner for 2018 by the
American Academy of Optometry (AAO) for his efforts in delivering vision care to refugee communities over more than three decades. The Brien Holden Humanitarian Award is awarded annually by AAO as a way to honor the memory and work of Professor Brien Holden, PhD, DSc, FAAO. The award recognizes an individual or organization who has made significant contributions to improve eyecare within a country or region. In particular, the award acknowledges humanitarian efforts in the non-profit/not-for-profit sector that build or support the development of sustainable eyecare systems in developing communities.

ROCKVILLE, Md.—The
Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) has announced that its optometry residency matching service—or ORMatch—posted strong results again this year. The 2018 match occurred March 12. Results from this year’s match “continue positive upward trends from last year’s, and suggest that optometry students increasingly value completing a residency after graduation,” ASCO noted in its announcement this week. Among the key statistics from this year’s match are: the number of participating students (517) was the all-time highest and marked an increase of 7.7 percent from 2017, and the number of residency sites increased to 240, a 2.1 percent increase.
