National Federation of Opticianry Schools (NFOS)/Hoya College Bowl at
OptiCon @ Vision Expo. Ophthalmic lens technology leader
Hoya Vision Care sponsored the event Saturday evening at OptiCon at Vision Expo East. Zachary McDaniel from Roane State Community College was this year’s winner of the competition, which was attended by about 300 people, according to a Hoya Vision Care announcement. “Working with the NFOS has been a terrific opportunity for Hoya to connect with the schools of opticianry and students,” Hoya Vision Care, North America, chief marketing officer Grady Lenski said in the announcement.

MUNICH, Germany—From Jan. 25 to 27 Vision Monday headed to the heart of Bavaria for opti 2019. Walking through show felt a little different this time around as the eyewear exhibition was featured among six halls of the Fairground Munich for the first time. However, the expansive show floor was no less packed as each section from hall C1 all the way to C6 was buzzing with foot traffic as it hosted around 28,000 visitors and 631 exhibitors.

NEW ORLEANS—SECO International, which concluded here late last month, announced that J. Max Ernst, OD, officially accepted the honor of being named president of the organization during the House of Delegates meeting at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center here. In addition, five honorees accepted their 2019 SECO International awards for leadership in optometry and their significant contributions to the profession.

ORLANDO, Fla.—IDOC, a privately-held alliance of independent optometrists, hosted its National Conference, The Connection, at the Coronado Springs Resort here from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2. Over 500 independent optometrists, IDOC staff members and vendor partners, a record for the group, attended the three-day event, which also marked the 20th anniversary of IDOC. Dave Brown, IDOC president and CEO, addressed the core values of the company which have emerged over the past two decades, now serving as the driving force behind the “new” IDOC.

MILAN—The 49th edition of Mido closed earlier this week with organizers reporting attendance of 59,500, a slight increase in attendance from the prior year, attracting visitors from 159 countries to the three-day event, held here Feb. 23 through 25. “Eyewear is an Italian tradition that is now a leading global industry," stated Dario Galli, Italy’s vice minister of Economic Development, who was one of the dignitaries who visited the fair. He met with Mido and ANFAO president Giovanni Vitaloni during the show's BESTORE awards honoring optical stores from around the world, chosen from among the many candidates from 35 countries.
