CooperVision Launches Mobile App to Help Consumers Find and Wear the Right Contact Lens
Product: CooperVision Mobile App
Top Line: The challenge of finding and wearing the right contact lenses is being simplified due to a new mobile application (app) from
CooperVision. The CooperVision app provides U.S. consumers with access to useful contact lens information and tools, including ways to find a nearby optometrist, to identify potentially ideal lenses to discuss with their eyecare practitioner, and a customizable reminder that will sound an alert when it is time for contact lens replacement.
“People are relying on their smartphones more and more, with
research showing that in 2013, more than 95 million people accessed health information or tools from their mobile devices,” said Charlene Pabustan, digital marketing manager, CooperVision. “At CooperVision, we want to provide consumers with the information they need in a format that is the most convenient—a streamlined, easy-to-use app that offers the tools and resources that contact lens wearers need, all in one place.”

CooperVision, Inc. The CooperVision app provides U.S. consumers with access to useful contact lens information and tools, including ways to find a nearby optometrist, to identify potentially ideal lenses to discuss with their eyecare practitioner, and a customizable reminder that will sound an alert when it is time for contact lens replacement.
Close Up: Among the features of the CooperVision app are:
- Find a Doctor —For users who wish to locate an optometrist, this feature uses the mobile device's location services or a zip code to find nearby eyecare professionals. With the tap of a finger, users can call a recommended office from right within the app.
- Find a Lens—By choosing from a variety of eye conditions and lifestyle factors—such as sports activity, frequent computer work, or travel—app users can utilize this tool to identify the CooperVision lenses that are best for them.
- Lens Reminder—People have a lot to remember. The Lens Reminder allows users to set up reminders for the replacement of their (or their family members') contact lenses. The reminders are customizable based on each individual's bi-weekly or monthly recommended wearing schedules.
- Vision & Health—What are astigmatism and presbyopia? How does the eye convert light to an image? What is the proper way to clean and care for contact lenses? How do you put contact lenses in your eyes? All of these common questions and more are answered within the app.
- Products—Users can dive more deeply into each of CooperVision's contact lens families with the detailed information included within the app. Favorite products can be saved, shared with others via email, and then be discussed with eyecare practitioners on an upcoming visit.
Vital Stats: "This is the third launch of our consumer app, and we expect it to be the biggest yet," said Catherine Muriel, vice president of marketing North America, CooperVision. "The app was previously launched in the U.K. and China. Now we are expanding its availability—and its features—to consumers in the U.S."
The CooperVision mobile application is available for iOS and Android devices, and can be downloaded by visiting the App Store, Google Play, or

New Plier Simplifies Removal of Display Lenses
Product: Lens Splitting Plier #5027F
Top Line: Removing the display lenses from a frame, especially a rimlon eyewire, is time consuming and frustrating. Western Optical Supply’s Lens Splitting Plier can split the lens and remove it in one squeeze without damaging the eyewire.
Close Up: This tool is specially designed to perform a task that frequently comes up in a dispensary and laboratory.
“The eyewear on display has thin demo lenses in the eyewire that need to be removed before inserting an actual Rx lens,” explained Joshua Freilich, president of Western Optical Supply. “For a frame with a complete eyewire, this is done by removing the eyewire screw and opening the eyewire, or heating the eyewire if it is plastic, to get it to expand slightly to accept the lens by pushing it into place. However, with a rimlon frame that has the cord it lieu of an eyewire on the bottom half of the lens (also called a semi-rimless), removing the lens is a challenge. Usually the demo lens is in so tightly that you cannot pop it out with your fingers. This means that you have to use a rimlon tool to remove the wire first. That’s time consuming, and you run the risk of breaking the line.”
Vital Stats: The Lens Splitting Plier #5027F can be seen on the Western website,
www.westernoptical.com, where you can watch a live demonstration (Western Optical LIVE! page 23).
